Last week I listed the "traditional" interim tasks. This week I offer a slightly different view of interim work. This work was created by the the Center for Congregational Health, a ministry of Wake Forest Baptist Health’s FaithHealth Division (NC).
Five Focus Points of a Healthy Congregation
Heritage: Reviewing how the congregation has been shaped and formed.
Mission: Defining and redefining sense of purpose and direction.
Leadership: Reviewing the congregation’s ways of organizing and developing new and effective clergy and lay leadership.
Connections: Discovering all the relationships and networks a faith community builds beyond itself.
Future: Synthesizing the interim work, activating and training the pastoral search or call committee, and coaching the committee (as requested) to accomplish its work.
Focus points are less "checklist" driven and more "appreciative" inquiries, Using focus points, the Interim Minister and congregation, examine the congregation's assets (vs, problems) in order to prepare to call a new pastor.
Problems aren't ignored in the focus point model but they are put in perspective. I'm fond of saying, "You can't do ministry and mission with what you DON'T have, so what DO you have that will help you do your ministry and mission?"
