Lent Week 2: Holy Vessels Prayer Suggestions for Healing of Community

Updated: Apr 9

As promised, an excerpt from this week’s sermon:

There are three reasons why we strongly encourage you to not worry about the details of the following.

1) They will be emailed to you. 2) The only thing here that is one size fits all is intentional, disciplined prayer. 3) We strongly encourage you to do this as you discern God is calling you to do. Nonetheless, here’s what I’m going to do. You’ll soon understand the general idea and with God’s help be able to make it your own.

For 2 days this week, on Monday and Tuesday, let us consider the clear broken beach glass to represent you…. Light a candle, hold a piece of clear glass, take a slow deep breath and focus your prayer on your need to belong, your need to be cared for, your need to be healed.

Ask yourself, what connections do you need to tend to in order to heal any isolation you may feel? Consider this an invitation to let someone know that you need to belong, that you need to be cared for, and what you need to be healed. Jesus clearly invites us, always, to ask, and it will be given you.*

For 2 days this week, on Wednesday and Thursday, let us consider the Blue broken beach glass as representing Calvin. Light a candle, hold a piece of blue glass, take a slow deep breath… and focus your prayer on what you can do to help the Calvin community heal, of what you can do to build up the community that is Calvin to be God’s community, to be a part of God’s kin-dom.

For 2 days this week, on Friday and Saturday, let us consider the Green beach glass to be the community outside Calvin. Light a candle, hold a piece of green glass, take a slow deep breath… and focus your prayer on the people you have encountered or heard about in the last few months who are suffering and lack support. What could we do to reach out and to focus on healing of the parts of our community we don’t spend time praying about enough?

Then on Saturday night, perhaps after dinner, light a candle, hold all three colors of glass, take a slow deep breath… and focus your prayer on inviting God’s Spirit to live and move in you. And when you feel called, take those segregated pieces of broken beach glass and form them into something that represents for you, God’s will for healing your connection to community, the Calvin community and the wider community. Take a picture of it. Write a little about what God revealed to you. Post it if you’d like. Just make sure it doesn’t get washed away by the waves of life and lost in the mix.
