Project Hope thanks you! Many thanks to everyone who helped make the Project Hope Tote assembly on February 14th a success! Thank you for your generous donations. We collected more than enough items to fill 63 totes. The extras will be used for the March assembly. Thanks to the confirmation class and leaders for getting items packed and organized prior to the assembly. Thanks to the children for creating some wonderful cards that were a great addition to the bags. Thank you to everyone who eagerly showed up to assemble the totes. Thank you to those who worked behind the tables to keep the assembly running smoothly. Many, many people will benefit from your kindness and generosity. The 63 totes were delivered to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh on Friday, February 19th. To view pictures please visit www.sparkinghope.org
Adult Education in Lent : The Gospel of John: Do you know what distinguishes John's gospel from the other three. It is radically different, but how? It is called the most spiritual of all the gospels. Why? Dr. Standish will lead us in a class each Sunday morning that will explore John's gospel, and how it presents an incredibly different and powerful vision of who Jesus Christ was, where Christ is now, and how God, through the Holy Spirit, is active in our lives today.
What Are You Doing for Lent ? One of the struggles many Christians have during Lent is whether to give something up or to take something on? The tradition during Lent is to engage in some sort of fast, to let go of something that we love, as a way of sacrificing it to God during Lent. The tradition of Lent comes out of Jesus' spending forty days in the desert, where he fasted and prayed. As you consider what to do during Lent, look at Matthew 4:1-11. This is the grounding passage of Lent, and our example. Consider how you can turn Lent into a time of fasting and prayer. Consider giving something up, and in the time you would normally have spent devoted to that “something,” spend that time in prayer. For instance, consider giving up some small activity once a week, and spend that time reading the Bible, praying, and reflecting. Consider giving up a bad habit, but spend the same time you would have devoted to the habit to building a new habit. Consider giving up some time that would normally be spent in your own service to find a way to serve others. Lent should be a time of spiritual renewal and growth.
How Can You Help the People of Haiti ? You can help them through the Presbyterian Disaster Fund. The Presbyterian Church (USA) has a disaster team that it sends to areas struck by catastrophe. You can help by giving a donation to the disaster fund. Already funds from the One Great Hour of Sharing are being sent to Haiti , and the Presbyterian Church is in the process of raising $1 million for further help. To contribute to their efforts you can either go directly to the PC (USA) website at http://www.pcusa.org/pda , or write a check to Calvin Presbyterian Church that we will send to the disaster fund. If you write a check, please make sure it says "Haiti Relief" in the memo line. Also, please be sure to pray for the people of Haiti and all relief workers.
