Calvin Presbyterian Church is a different kind of church. We take spirituality and prayer seriously, and it’s our foundation. We are a church that reaches out to people who say they are “spiritual but not religious” by being a church that is both spiritual and religious. It’s for this reason that Calvin Church has gained national attention, has been studied through a number of grant-sponsored research projects, and was a prominent part of the book, Christianity for the Rest of Us (for information on the book, click here)
We believe that God is deeply involved in everyone’s life, and we try to help people cultivate that connection so that they can live Spirit-led lives. In many ways this emphasis reflects our Celtic heritage. We believe in the goodness of God’s creation, and we seek to cultivate that goodness in all people. A guiding prayer for us is St. Patrick’s prayer:
Christ be with me, Christ within me,Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in the mouth of friend and stranger.
At Calvin Church, we are grounded in a basic question that Jesus asked continually in prayer: “Abba, what are you calling me to do?” We encourage people to seek God’s guiding voice at church, home, work, play, and with friends, strangers, or anyone else; for we believe God is everywhere, speaking to us and listening. We believe that by learning together how to listen for and hear God’s voice, and by following that voice in faith, we discover a way of living that is full of grace, wonder, and possibility.
Visitors often comment that worshipping at Calvin Church just feels… different. People feel at home when they walk in the doors of the church. We offer an open and non-judgmental haven where people can come together and share in their spiritual journey. As a result, we attract a lot of people who have felt neglected, judged, or hurt by other churches.
Those who have joined Calvin Church over the years have tried to describe their experiences and why they joined. Here are some of their comments:
We have developed a vibrant community of active and involved members who engage in spiritual pursuits through a number of Calvin’s ministries. These ministries include a well regarded drama program that puts on a number of musicals for the community each year, a growing small group program for a variety of different interests, a prayer ministry, one of the area’s best youth programs, a music program that provides community concerts and amazing music during services, a mission emphasis that reaches people locally and globally, and so much more.
Please consider joining us for worship or becoming involved in one of our ministries. You are always welcome.
Calvin Presbyterian Church is a spiritual family sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and discerning God’s purpose and will through sincere commitment to worship, prayer, fellowship, teaching and mission.
